The fifth nerve enters the brainstem at the mid-pons. Semilunar ganglion neurons send root fibers caudally in the brainstem to levels reaching C4 of the cord. They synapse on spinal 5th nucleus that formed the ventral trigeminal tract carrying pain/temp to the sensory thalamus. Various levels of the brainstem and cord are represented in the distribution over the face. The chief sensory nucleus receives semilunar ganglion axons from the most highly specific receptors localizing touch, pressure and joint position. These signals for 2 point tactile, vibration and stereological localizations are carried to the thalamus via the bilateral dorsal trigeminal tract. A mesencephalic root is CNS positioned sensory neurons that act for interrupting masticatory actions by electrotonic connection as a reflex.
