The lateral and medial geniculate nuclei (MGB & LGB) are thalamic nuclei acting as temporal gates of auditory and visual inputs to the primary sensory cortices. Just dorsal and rostral, tactile & pain pathways for the body and head are gated by relay nuclei (VPM & VPL).

Very important are the laminar and the reticular thalamic nuclei that act as synchronizing elements of the thalamic gate. The posterior commissure is located just medial to the geniculate bodies in coronal section.
