SUMMARY OF AXONAL TERMINATIONS
Axonal terminations contact targets by apposition of presynaptic membrane specializations to postsynaptic sites of neuronal dendrites or somata (some end on axons).
Axon terminals are boutons with transmitters that is held in synaptic vesicles and accumulate in boutons.
Axonal arbors have multiple calcium entry sites as presynaptic boutons where synaptic vesicles release transmitter.
Axonal arbor terminals have voltage gated calcium channels in their terminals (presynaptic sites) that sense action potentials and allow calcium to enter the presynaptic terminal.
The vesicle membrane fuses with the axonal membrane opening the vesicle so that the contents enter the gap between the pre- and post-synaptic membranes.
