Light projected into one eye produces a constriction of the pupil in the contralateral eye. The ipsilateral side reflex has a direct connection from the retina to the ipsilateral Edinger-Westphal nucleus. The light sensing fibers also connect to the contralateral Edinger-Westphal nucleus via the pretectal area. The Edinger-Westphal nucleus projects parasympathetic fibers to the ciliary ganglion in the orbit and the postganglionic cells project to the constrictor pupil muscle. Failure of the consensual response is due to a lesion interrupting the crossing in the pretectum.
