The PNS distributes dorsal root and cranial ganglion neuronal axons over the entire body. These cells form mechanical and chemical interactions on axonal branch terminals. The terminations are specialized according to target interactions with supporting cells.

The most important functional systems are tactile, pressure, joint position and pain senses. The two tactile systems group into specific and general. General tactile is coupled with pain and temperature while specific tactile senses precisely locates touch over the entire body and head.
